It is a combination of the European prefix “latino-” and the New World, “America”. It was used to symbolically sever Mexico’s Spanish roots, while at the same time, reinforcing a notion of belonging between the two nations. The Latin race, as defined in this context, was composed of all people descending from nations who spoke romance tongues, descending from Latin. Hence, this definition would effectively include French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, and Spanish peoples etc. as “latinos” along with the people descended from the Latin colonies. “Latino” as a category used in the United States may be understood as a shorthand for the Spanish word latinoamericano or the Portuguese phrase latino-americano, thus excluding speakers of Romance languages from Europe.

Latin America, extending from the deserts of northern Mexico to the icy wilds of Tierra del Fuego in Chile and Argentina, encompasses many diverse countries and peoples. Though most of these countries are largely Catholic and Spanish-speaking, thanks to a shared history of colonization by Spain, they have at least as many differences as they do similarities with each other. In the United States the terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” (or “Latina” for a woman; sometimes written as “Latinx” to be gender-neutral) were adopted in an attempt to loosely group immigrants and their descendants who hail from this part of the world.

Given small sample sizes, the results for Puerto Rican, Cuban, South American, and “other origin” Hispanic women are not statistically significant at a p value of 0.05. Gomez is featured on a remix of Kesha’s top ten single “Die Young” alongside Juicy J and Wiz Khalifa; the remix was featured on the Japanese deluxe edition of Kesha’s second studio album, Warrior .
The song was released on iTunes immediately following the performance. On February 2, 2020, Lovato performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl LIV. A few days later, Lovato revealed that she would host a talk show, Pillow Talk With Demi Lovato, to air on the new video streaming platform Quibi. On April 16, Lovato released a collaboration titled “I’m Ready”, with English singer-songwriter Sam Smith. In June 2020, it was announced that YouTube would release a four-part documentary series following Lovato’s life.
A study done in 2009 shows that there is not a significant difference between the attitudes or preferences towards the terms among young (18–25) and older individuals. Among the overall Hispanic population, young Hispanic prefer to identify themselves with their family’s country of origin. Yet, older Hispanics are more likely to identify as white than younger Hispanics.

But there’s a more insidious side to this kind of stereotyping — besides being inaccurate, these types of depictions have been used to blame high rates of teen pregnancies in the community on the “spicy Latina.” Though theCenter for American Progressreports that the level of educational attainment for Latinas has risen in the past few years, graduation rates for Latinas, at 31.3% in 2008, are still significantly lower than graduation rates for white women, at 45.8%.
